funk was the syncopated groove that emerged in the mid-sixties through hits from james brown and dyke and the blazers. it was a natural development out of rhythm and blues. thousands of local bands tried to emulate brown’s success, and in the process created a plethora of rare and sought after 45s and album cuts that have been mined by djs and producers to fill floors or provide breakbeats. whilst the 20 tracks on this compilation would cost you thousands of pounds to own on their original issue, that isn’t really the point. instead you get to listen to magnificent grooves such as mickey & the soul generations explosive ‘iron leg’, andrew brown’s blues tinged ‘you made me suffer’ or the message music of 24 carat black.

for over five years, all day i dream has been where deep and emotive meet house music. propelled by a community of forward thinking artists drawn around the scion of master curator and sunset/sunrise set specialist, lee burridge. all day i dream formally welcomes lost desert to the label with the release of lingala, a two-track collaborative effort with burridge himself, that also features junior on vocals. lost desert was picked out of obscurity after burridge discovered his music while trekking in a remote area of a long lost land. a fast forged friendship inevitably lead to the studio, and lingala’s the enrapturing sophomore result. the duo’s first project together debuted on lee’s night time imprint, get weird, earlier this year to widespread support. lingala, is a beautifully composed ten-minute sonic journey. built around a mystical lead vocal sung by newcomer junior in his native linagles the raw emotion slowly builds in intensity over propulsive basslines and deep melodic grooves . gorje hewek & izhevski’s interpretation of lingala is a markedly different affair. focussing on musical layers rather than the vocal the duo’s signature spacey atmospheres and minimal rhythmic percussion add extra strings creating uplifting moments that contrast the original’s mood.

after “theory of strings (part1)” ennio colaci and fabio della torre present the second part! the first track of a-side is the one who gives the title to the whole project, - theory of strings-, a dubby groover with a funky and psychedelic feel in the vein of a more coloured and dirtier studio 1 or soundhack. the -feeling good vibe- keeps going relaxed and chill with the smart up and down mood of the track -forty degrees- while on b side minimono get drier, minimalistic and more mysterious with the subtle after-hour jam of rewind. this strong effort by fabio and ennio ends trough the cinematic atmosphere and the romantic piano notes of the gentle but raw closing act -still mine-. mind the strings!

one of stockholm’s best-kept secrets is now out of the closet. with no information on the artist, what we get is two rumbling techno tracks with a cause. “grounded theory” builds on a ground loop layered with a bellish sequence, percussion and stabby hits. “furious dub” is a dubby take, made up by filtered chords and a bassline with an offbeat lfo. both tracks are aimed to make you move. it’s your body, you decide!

sweet addiction is yuksek’s great studio comeback. its 5 elegant tracks signal his return as a main player. the maxi, which prefigures a 3rd album, features the greek singer monika (make it easy) and the duo her (on the1st single, sweet addiction). yuksek’s characteristic sound, midway between post-disco, house and pop, shines through on its various tracks. even more than on his last album, living on the edge of time, yuksek shows his talent as a singer. his new melodies are sunnier than before, his beats and production more subtle. airy, but still conveying a touch of hedonism in its most club-friendly sounds, this ep is a foretaste of a sparkling new opus. bio : at the start of the 2000s, yuksek released a series of maxis and then two albums: away from the sea (2009) and living on the edge of time (2011).those records laid the foundations of a sound that uncompromisingly combined pop, disco and electro. then in 2013, he set up his own label: partyfine. it is now home to artists such as clarens, weekend affair, get a room!, jean tonique, juveniles,tepr and villa.

newcomer region takes no time to get his credentials across, and this debut ep is all you could possibly ask for from an artist making their way up the food chain. coming though on the young jaunt label, region dishes out some seriously magnificent dub techno lashings here, with the opener -subline- being something of rough gem, the remix comes from lies-associate voiski, and the frenchman strips the whole thing down to a deeper, murkier tone that we ve come to associate him to. -borders-, on the b-side, is a supremely deep and meditative house track with a touch of the shed in it, and main man basic soul unit drops his version of the tune, a broken beat assemblage with that same dubwise feel that wraps the groove of the original cut.

stockholm-based imprint swedish brandy productions serves up a sultry four track v/a 12 inch with deep and soulful gems. first out on the a side you get the track * legs lover*. equipped with yamaha rs-7000, moog rouge and roland juno 106, moscow based house and techno purist and producer harry light gives us an uncompromising old school deep house groover with crisp pounding beats, stuttering chords and distinct catchy hooks. harry light has previous releases on labels such as artreform, pro-tez and beef to name a few. the a side ends off with the post-disco sounding killer track “overland & sea” by london based producer and dj dan westlake aka westlake72. dan’s sound borrows liberally from the history of club and dance music, mixing and matching eras to create his own contemporary sonic palette, sighting the early and mid 80 s new york post-disco producers such as darryl payne and paul simpson in particular as key influences. on the flip side soultechnic aka deejaykul delivers the deep and classy track “addicted”. rául navarette, the man behind both aliases, has been holding it down since the late 80 s, releasing music on labels like atjazz record company, z records, peng, del, basic fingers and xtrasolar records, and remixing great artists like opolopo, the rurals, gregory del piero, kenny bobien, monday michiru, monodeluxe, diviniti and many more.

raam is back with a solid 4 tracker. the ep starts with ment which is a raw and jacking deep house track. a big rolling bassline, drum machine grooves and melancholy pads create that special house feeling. lipslide is a sublime and discoish house track with dubby chords and bubbly synths that slowly but surely unfolds into a serious groove that really work the floor. on the flip ment get some remix treatment from samo dj (lies, ttt, born free etc) and alexi3d. they transform the original in to gritty and percussive techno trip. the ep ends with ask which is a slow house-not-house track.

london based odd are a natural fit for infuse with their rolling hypnotic grooves featuring in the sets of the fuse crew for the past few years. their cold fusion ep kicks off with get away, the ep s vinyl only track, a deep edged shuffler, custom fit for those hazier dance-floor moments. roll the beats has a distinctly tripped out sensibility whilst making moves ups the energy with a sprightly house-edged bounce.
